Education that builds stronger communities

Community · 6 min read · By the Now We Know TV! field team

Every episode of this show is, in some sense, about education. But over a season of filming we kept meeting organizations for whom teaching is not a byproduct of the work. It is the work. Their classrooms just do not look like classrooms.

The locker room

At Champro Sports outside Chicago, the product is team equipment: helmets, pads, uniforms, the gear a kid straps on before learning what practice and commitment mean. The people we interviewed talked about youth sports the way teachers talk about school, as infrastructure for growing up. Every affordable helmet is a seat in that classroom. The company obsession with value is really an obsession with access, keeping the price of participation low enough that a league, a school, or a family on a budget can say yes.

The walk-in clinic

Health education fails quietest in the places with the least access to it. That is what made the OnMed care stations such a compelling segment. Each unit brings a live clinician to communities that may be an hour from the nearest doctor, and every visit doubles as a small lesson: what your blood pressure means, what to watch for, when to seek help. Access to care turns out to be access to understanding.

The certified forest

Even our forestry segment came back to teaching. The Forest Stewardship Council certification work only matters if consumers understand what the label on the lumber means. Their educators spend as much time explaining responsible management to the public as their auditors spend verifying it in the field.

Innovative programs create opportunities where they are needed most, and the organizations behind them rarely call themselves educators. They call themselves manufacturers, clinics, and nonprofits. Spend a day filming any of them and the truth is obvious: a community gets stronger every time somebody explains something clearly, and hands someone else the chance to take part.
